Though most frequently known for his role as the drummer in power pop band Vacation, Dylan McCartney’s listening habits tend to fall on the shadowed side of the street. He’s a devotee to all things synth-drenched, post-punk, and industrial - Siousxie & the Banshees, Young Marble Giants, and Chrome all play important roles in his musical lexicon. On “Flash,” the band’s first single from their upcoming LP Cold Grasp, Dylan waxes down but not out, repeating the phrase “make me believe it won’t destroy me again” as a mantra, backgrounded by twinkling lead guitar and a churning rhythm section. Cold Grasp was mixed by Doni Schroader, ex-drummer of …And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead and sound engineer extraordinaire, and the band has never sounded better. On Flash + Demos, listeners get a sneak peak of Doni’s pristine production with his mix of “Flash” alongside a smattering of Dylan’s home recorded demos - some of which eventually became songs for the LP, and others that we’re simply artistically richer for the chance to hear.
